Echocardiogram (Echo) at Global Cardiac Center

Comprehensive Heart Imaging with Echocardiography
An Echocardiogram (Echo) is a key diagnostic tool used to visualize and assess the heart’s structure and function. At Global Cardiac Center, we utilize advanced echocardiography techniques to provide detailed images of the heart, helping diagnose and manage a wide range of cardiac conditions.
What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a non-invasive imaging test that uses ultrasound waves to create live images of the heart. By placing a small device called a transducer on the chest, high-frequency sound waves are sent into the body. These waves bounce off the heart’s structures and are captured to produce detailed images and videos of the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow.
Why is an Echocardiogram Important?
1. Detailed Imaging: An Echo provides clear, real-time images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow, allowing for precise evaluation of heart function and structure.
2. Diagnosis and Monitoring: It helps diagnose heart conditions such as heart failure, valve disorders, congenital heart defects, and pericardial disease. It is also used to monitor the progression of known heart conditions.
3. Guiding Treatment: The information from an Echo can guide treatment decisions and help assess the effectiveness of ongoing treatments.
Types of Echocardiograms
1. Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE): This is the most common type, performed by placing a transducer on the chest to obtain images of the heart. It is usually done in an outpatient setting and requires no special preparation.
2. Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): For more detailed images, a TEE involves inserting a specialized probe down the esophagus. This approach provides closer views of the heart structures and is often used when more detailed imaging is needed or if a TTE is inconclusive.
3. Stress Echocardiogram: This test combines an Echo with a stress test to evaluate how the heart performs under physical exertion. It helps to identify heart conditions that may not be apparent when the heart is at rest.
4. Fetal Echocardiogram: Used during pregnancy, this Echo assesses the heart of the unborn baby to detect congenital heart defects and monitor the baby’s heart health.
What to Expect During an Echocardiogram
1. Preparation: In most cases, there is no special preparation required for an echocardiogram. For TEE, you may be asked to fast for a few hours before the procedure.
2. Procedure: For a TTE, you will lie on an examination table while a gel is applied to your chest. The transducer will be moved over your chest to capture images. For a TEE, you will receive sedation, and the probe will be gently inserted through your mouth into your esophagus.
3. Duration: The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the type of Echo and the specific diagnostic needs.
4. Results: A cardiologist will analyze the images and provide a report on your heart’s condition. You will discuss the results and any necessary follow-up with your healthcare provider.
